Great Trees Offa’s Dyke 2021

The 10th July 2021 marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Offa’s Dyke Path national trail.

To mark this momentous event, Treehunter Rob McBride, founder of Ellesmere based, Treespect CIC and Bianca Jagger, President and Chief Executive, Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation, Council of Europe Goodwill Ambassador and IUCN Bonn Challenge Ambassador are running a fun contest to find the most remarkable trees along – and in the vicinity of – the Offa’s Dyke Path and Monument.

We are looking for trees with a particular story to tell.
Beautiful trees that capture the imagination or mean something to someone. Are you particularly fond of a tree close to the Offa’s Dyke Path?
Is there a tree that you enjoy seeing, a tree that has special personal memories for you?
To nominate a tree, send the details of the tree and photographs to: rob@thetreehunter.com
Nominations for ‘entrees’ are now open until midday on 30th June.
You can nominate more than one tree if desired. Please seek the permission of the landowner before submitting your nomination. ‘Entrees’ will be displayed on thetreehunter.com site.

A unique, hand-made trophy, kindly sponsored by Hartey Wealth Management, will be presented to the winner. Prizes will also be awarded to second and third-placed trees.

To mirror the 12 chapters in the Great Trees of Offa’s Dyke book – due out later this year – a voting panel of 12  ‘Celebritree’ judges will choose their favourite top three trees from a shortlist drawn up from nominated trees in early July.

The winner(s) will be announced at the 50th-anniversary celebration event at the Offa’s Dyke Centre Knighton on the 10th July 2021. See Below for further details.

Well-know TV Presenter, Iolo Williams says,
‘Ancient trees are both an invaluable wildlife habitat and a connection with our distant past. Old oaks can be home to well over a thousand species and it’s incredible to think that the oldest trees along Offa’s Dyke will have witnessed the age of the wolf, Welsh princes and the Marcher lords. They are an invaluable natural resource to be respected and cherished.’
